Hi, I am Lisa,
Welcome to In-Body.

Myself and the Soma team have created this programme of practices for you to enter into over the coming year. We want to invite you to move and engage with your body, your home spaces and your local environment in different and new ways. We want you to use the different technologies within your home, to play with your senses and to see where it leads you.

Each monthly In-Body invitation is led by a dancer, each dancer bringing their own practice in supporting our journey across the 12 months.

In-Body was drawn from a participatory performance called Soma, which uses multi-person VR technology to explore bodies and their environments and the materiality of physical, virtual and imagined worlds.

In-Body moves with the ideas behind Soma as an hour-long performance, into a 12-month journey which takes place at home. Imagine it as a fragmented performance, occurring in moments, in which your body is centred and in which you have complete agency to move and play.

Each in-Body invitation and the programme as a whole is an offering –To connect, to feel, and to move.

The invitations will come in a variety of formats. Some as a visual journey, others as audio and written provocations. We hope you use the formats that suit you best – and do let us know if you have any questions along the way. We plan to let the practices speak to one another as they progress, so that you experience a journey which accumulates over time.

We invite you to take the journey with us, in the order of the invitations as they are released each month and of course you can re-visit and repeat practices as you wish – following your own curiosities, in your own time. The invitations will be available to you as an ongoing online resource through the year and beyond.

You’ll need a space to move in that feels private enough for focused concentration, a yoga mat or other cleared space, and comfortable clothing to move in. You can work on your own or with others. You also might find it helpful to keep a writing or drawing journal to reflect on the process as you go along.

We would love to begin and to build a community around In-Body. We would love for you to share the experiences you have with each other.  You can do this by submitting an image, text, audio or small film via the form on this page or share online via social platforms using #InBody. You could post a picture, write or say something. You can be as creative as you like.  We will populate the In-Body Diary with your monthly responses so that everyone can keep connected through this journey. We want to create a sense of liveness, of being with each other – a sense of connecting through doing these moving and sensing practices – perhaps at a similar time of day or in a similar space at home.

So, we begin with an invitation called ‘A Room You Know’ and this is guided by dancer, Laila Diallo. The invitation is a starting point, a locating of body and home space. We will meet you ‘there’.

Thank-you for being part of this special project. We really hope you enjoy it.
